I think working in science has a range of benefits. Firstly, a lot of the work is flexible – I have meetings, teaching, etc, but outside of that, I can pretty much work when and where I want, so long as I get the job done. I also get to travel, both for work, on fieldwork and conferences, but also to live – I had the opportunity to move overseas for a couple of years, and I might do so again someday. But perhaps the biggest benefit is that I get to do a job I like, and that really interests me. I’d find it very difficult to do a job I wasn’t that interested in – I’d think I’d struggle for motivation.
Being able to work outdoors, working with animals that I find interesting, and working with lots of other academics who are all very knowledgeable. It’s also great to be able to study something so specific, and to find that you can actually teach other people about your subject.
To me, I get paid, plus I like the work.
To everyone else, chemicals are essential for modern life, think of plastics, paints, medicines, even your clothes
