An earthquake is what we get when two pieces of rock try to move past each other, and get stuck. Whilst they are stuck, stress builds up, until the break, moving very suddenly and quickly. That rapid, violent movement sends out shockwaves through the surrounding material, which we feel as the Earth shaking.
