As a scientist, you can change to another field in future. But when you go on to study arts, to switch to science will be very difficult.
I studied Biochemistry for my first degree and now most of my classmates work in Banks as Managers as their brain has been highly challenged due to a science background
As a scientist you learn to recognise hazards and assess risk for all activity that you do in the lab. You also understand the impact of your actions , or your lack of action, thus making science a really safe area of work. Unfortunately the consequence of accident or lack of action can be devastating so all scientists are very risk aware.
If you mean safe as in personal safety, then a lot of scientific professions have risk assessments – we run through the risks that we might face when carrying out experiments or collecting samples, and work out how to avoid accidents, what protective equipment to wear, and so on. This is reinforced throughout your career, so there is very little room for accidents to occur.
Safety is something we really need to take seriously, because if something goes wrong it can hurt people, animals and the environment> I am not sure science is safer than some other work, but we certainly know the dangers so perhaps we think and take care more than other types of work. I am told one of the most dangerous places is the office as people become careless since it is seen as a safe place. We are taught to always hold a hand near stair handrails, so if we stumble we can grab it – isn’t that just common sense?
