When I was very young I thought I could perhaps invent something like that. Once I started work it was for companies who just wanted to make money, but by selling good things. No I will not save the world, but I can say we make it a better place with our products

I’d like to think my work might contribute to helping us make the world a better place. In terms of ‘saving’ it, I think its important to realise that science really is a group effort. Scientists work together to make progress – its very rare that one person on their own is responsible for a major advance these days. And thats good – I find it much better to feel like part of a community, part of team, all pulling together towards a common goal.

I don’t quite think I could save the world, but in a similar way to what Tim and Carl have suggested, I think it can make a difference. The work I do will help people to improve the health of our rivers, which is a really positive thing as we have a lot of those in the UK! I hope it will also be used to teach children from a young age, so that they have a better understanding of the environment.

I know that some of the research scientist that use our laboratories will go on to make improvements in peoples lives in many different ways, and I am proud to support that work, and train them into being the scientists that will change the world
