Estimating the size of an eruption can often be difficult. Sometimes, we can get a decent idea of the total volume of rock that might be erupted in a given eruption, but exactly when that might take place, what style of eruption it will be, and how violent that will be, are much more difficult to determine.
Similarly, whilst we can sometimes get some forewarning in cases where volcanoes are well-monitored, this is rarely more than a few days/hours warning that an eruption may be about to occur. More than than is very difficult to determine.
