Great question! When I did my MSc degree, I went to Iceland for a month to study fish and insects in a river catchment. These streams were geothermally heated – warmed by heat from the earth’s core. It was an amazing place to work and made me realise that I wanted to keep working around rivers as a career long-term. It was what made me apply for a PhD, because I knew I’d love a job that let me keep doing that sort of research. I’ve often said, doing a job is easier if you love what you do 🙂

Finding out anything for the first time – especially if you’re the first person to do it – is a really exciting feeling. The achievement, and the privilege of really knowing something, and understanding, make it a pretty special experience. And, as you say, it gives you a new burst of enthusiasm to try and push things further, to find out more, to push the boundaries of what we know and understand.
