      Even though our sun is a long way away from Earth, it still has effects on our planet. Storms on the surface of sun send out charged solar particles which can collide with our atmosphere. When this happens and those solar particles collide with molecules in our atmosphere, they cause them to light up, creating the aurora that we see.
