      Dirt is a mixture of lots of things – rocks, sand, clay, organic matter which comes from dead leaves, and so on. How much of each of these we find in dirt depends on where we are.

      This depends slightly on where you are, but in general, as Alex says, its a mix of small rocks, sands, clays, small bits of organic matter, and water.

      Ground up stones, and what is called organic matter – bits of dead plant or animals. Also a surprising amount of life if there is a bit of water, both animal, plant and fungi
