Consciousness is the degree of been alert or awake. If we are asleep at night, we are not aware of our environment but have some degree of consciousness like if someone shouts your name while you are asleep, you wake up and answer.
When the brain is injured, by accident or by drugs, it is possible to lose consciousness, like in a coma patient. The part of the brain responsible for consciousness is the cerebrum.

I think consciousness describes how aware we are of our surroundings – this can change based on where we are and what we are doing, as Yewande has said. On a more general note, consciousness is everything we experience in life, from the things we do, to the emotions we feel.
