Volcanoes erupt when magma rises to the surface – magma is the substance that forms when the earth’s mantle (one of the inner layers) melts. When this magma is rising, you get bubbles of gas forming inside it, which can cause pressure to build up if it can’t escape. This is why eruptions can be quite dangerous and explosive.
